The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has withheld results of some students who took part in the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in 321 schools for engaging in examination irregularities.
This year’s BECE passed without the near-annual occurrence of leaked papers following tight security and subsequent flying of question papers to examination centres.

“The Council has withheld the entire results of candidates from 321 schools pending the conclusion of investigations into alleged examination irregularities. The withheld results will be released as soon as the Counicl concludes its investigations,” a statement signed by Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC said.
The statement which announced the release of the provisional results also noted that, individual candidates from 1,025 schools were identified to have cheated, via the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software, and they had their relevant subjects cancelled.
188 candidates had their results cancelled, 22 of them entirely for bringing mobile phones into the examination room, and receiving external assistance, according to the statement.
In all 460, 930 candidates from 14,267 schools sat for the 2016 BECE.
According to WAEC this year’s result marks a 5.2 percent rise in the 2015 figures.
Leakages
The 2015 BECE saw the leaks of some of the examination papers leading to the cancellation of five papers.
In an effort to curb the leaks, the Council decided to start flying examination question papers to examination centres.
In the meantime, candidates can check their results online at WAEC’s website: www.waecgh.org.
The council has said it is in the process of dispatching the results to the various schools.
